National I LOVE My Feet Day! is celebrated annually on August 17. This is a day to appreciate how valuable our feet are, and a reminder to practice good foot care.
The human foot is a complex structure of 26 bones and 33 joints, layered with an intertwining web of more than 120 muscles, ligaments, and nerves. It serves the following functions:
- Supports weight
- Acts as a shock absorber
- Serves as a lever to propel the leg forward
- Helps maintain balance by adjusting the body to uneven surfaces
“Our feet are our primary mode of transportation. They quietly and faithfully help us stand, walk, run, jump, swim, skip and dance,” says Ami A. Sheth, DPM, President of the California Podiatric Medical Association (CPMA).
“Approximately 75% of the adult population of the United States has suffered foot pain at some point in their lives. Taking care of your feet is important for preventing long-term problems. Years of wear and tear can be hard on them, as can disease, bad circulation, improperly trimmed toenails and poorly fitting shoes,” Dr. Sheth continued.
“Your feet shouldn’t hurt.” Dr. Sheth said. “If you have persistent foot pain, consult a doctor of podiatric medicine (DPM). DPMs are podiatric physicians and surgeons, also known as podiatrists, qualified by their long and rigorous education, training and experience to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle and structures of the leg.”
